Drivers of zooplankton dispersal in a pond metacommunity

چکیده

Abstract Dispersal success is crucial for the survival of species in metacommunities. Zooplankton engage dispersal through time (i.e., egg bank) and space vectors) by means resting eggs. However, to patches does not equate successful colonization, as there a clear distinction between rates colonization. We performed field mesocosm experiment assessing colonization zooplankton from eggs or transport via directional wind/airborne biotic vectors vicinity three ponds. By using active vs. sterile pond sediments mesh-covered open mesocosms, we disentangled two mechanisms dispersal, i.e., bank space. found that both rotifers cladocerans, sediment type, mesh cover duration influenced richness composition. The relative contribution stages was substantial cladocerans. relatively weak cladocerans when compared rotifers, whereas contributed especially Our study demonstrates strongly depends on mode different can generate distinct community

Metacommunity structure of pond macroinvertebrates: effects of dispersal mode and generation time.

A recent challenge in community ecology is to understand under what conditions local and regional processes may be more important in shaping community structure. We investigated the role of dispersal mode and generation time for communities of macroinvertebrates in two sets of connected ponds during three consecutive years. We found no evidence that generation time affected metacommunity struct...

Dispersal Ability Determines the Role of Environmental, Spatial and Temporal Drivers of Metacommunity Structure

Recently, community ecologists are focusing on the relative importance of local environmental factors and proxies to dispersal limitation to explain spatial variation in community structure. Albeit less explored, temporal processes may also be important in explaining species composition variation in metacommunities occupying dynamic systems. We aimed to evaluate the relative role of environment...

General relationships between consumer dispersal, resource dispersal and metacommunity diversity.

One of the central questions of metacommunity theory is how dispersal of organisms affects species diversity. Here, we show that the diversity-dispersal relationship should not be studied in isolation of other abiotic and biotic flows in the metacommunity. We study a mechanistic metacommunity model in which consumer species compete for an abiotic or biotic resource. We consider both consumer sp...

Hierarchical drivers of reef-fish metacommunity structure.

Coral reefs are highly complex ecological systems, where multiple processes interact across scales in space and time to create assemblages of exceptionally high biodiversity. Despite the increasing frequency of hierarchically structured sampling programs used in coral-reef science, little progress has been made in quantifying the relative importance of processes operating across multiple scales...

Temporal stability of pond zooplankton assemblages

1. A large body of recent theory has recently developed focused on the relationship between the species diversity of competitor assemblages and the temporal stability of total competitor biomass. Many of these models predict that stability can increase with increasing diversity. 2. To explore natural relationships between zooplankton taxonomic diversity and temporal stability of total zooplankt...
